Top Attractions in Sibiu

1. Citadel Park (Parcul Cetății): Promenade Along Medieval Walls and Celebrity Alley

We always start our stroll through Sibiu at Citadel Park. We park here and take the stairs leading into the park, where the Carpenter's Tower (Turnul Dulgherilor) stands before us. Turning left, we walk along one of the paths that climb onto the wall, stopping at the Archer's Tower (Turnul Archebuzierilor). After enjoying the view from above, we descend onto Celebrity Alley, which separates the inner and outer walls, and head towards Cetății Street—the most beautiful street in Sibiu.

2. Cetății Street: The Most Beautiful Street in Sibiu

Although located in the city center, few tourists venture onto Cetății Street, the most beautiful street in Sibiu. I especially love it in the summer. This secluded, charming street hides many gems, including the Pardon Restaurant, the Sibiu State Philharmonic, and the Museum of Natural History.

3. Natural History Museum (Muzeul de Istorie Naturală)

Though not large, the Natural History Museum is a must-visit, especially for families with children. Here, you'll find the collections of the Transylvanian Society of Natural Sciences, showcasing fascinating exhibits.

4. Citadel Towers (Turnurile Cetății)

The Citadel Towers, particularly the Carpenter's Tower and the Potter's Tower, are located on Cetății Street and can be visited inside. The Carpenter's Tower, an emblematic structure from the 1300s, offers informative panels and a climb to the top on wooden stairs. The Potter's Tower is also part of the visit, with the entire tour being one-way.

5. Nicolae Bălcescu Pedestrian Alley

Nicolae Bălcescu Pedestrian Alley is lined with bakeries, terraces, and restaurants, as well as iconic buildings. It is similar to Republicii Street in Brașov or Calea Republicii in Oradea. Many performances during the Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS) take place here.

6. Great Square (Piața Mare)

At the end of the pedestrian alley lies Great Square, the main attraction of the city. Hosting events and fairs almost year-round, the square offers a different experience with each visit. The beautiful heritage buildings from the 15th-17th centuries have been well-preserved and adapted to modern life.

7. Brukenthal Museum (Muzeul Brukenthal)

The Brukenthal Museum is the most visited and appreciated museum in Sibiu, likely due to its status as the oldest museum in Romania. Housed in a Baroque-style building that was once the residence of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal, it features the richest art collection in Transylvania.

8. Council Tower (Turnul Sfatului)

The Council Tower, located between Great Square and Little Square, initially served as a gateway to the second fortification belt. Visitors can climb the 141 steps to the top for a panoramic view of Sibiu, although it is the second tallest tower in the city, after the Evangelical Church.

9. Little Square (Piața Mică)

Little Square lies between Great Square and Huet Square, maintaining a medieval atmosphere. Though it hosts fewer monuments, the square was once home to merchant buildings. Visitors can always find souvenir stalls, most offering locally made crafts.

The House of Arts stands out with its rectangular shape, white walls, and eight arches on the ground floor in Little Square. It hosts the Emil Sigerus Saxon Ethnography Museum, currently closed for renovation.

12. Liar's Bridge (Podul Minciunilor)

The Liar's Bridge connects Little Square and Huet Square and is one of the most important symbols of Sibiu. Legend has it that the bridge would collapse if someone told a lie while standing on it, making it a popular spot for lovers to declare their honest feelings.

14. Altemberger House - History Museum (Casa Altemberger - Muzeul de Istorie)

Originally the residence of Count Altemberger and later the city hall for 400 years, the Altemberger House now hosts the History Museum. The museum offers ten exhibitions covering the history of southern Transylvania from ancient times to the modern era.

13. Evangelical Church CA Saint Mary (Biserica Evanghelică CA Sfânta Maria)

This impressive Gothic church is one of the most striking buildings in Transylvania and my favorite spot in Sibiu. The church, built in the 14th century on the site of a 12th-century church, features a tower with seven levels and four corner turrets.

15. Stairway Tower (Turnul Scărilor)

The Stairway Tower is the only remaining gate of the original three in Sibiu’s first fortification belt, dating back to the 13th century. It now houses a café and connects the "Upper Town" and "Lower Town."

16. Lower Town (Orașul de Jos)

The Lower Town was built beyond Sibiu's fortifications and features some of the oldest houses in the city. Although it has few recognized monuments, the area offers a picturesque and historic walking experience.
